Are You Exploring the World of Soybeans?
Tempeh is a super healthy soy product made with fermented soybeans. Many people prefer the taste and texture over tofu. I truly enjoy both tofu and tempeh when they are cooked to golden brown perfection! However, my kids will not devour tempeh like they do tofu. I think it might be due to the fact that they despise barbecue sauce, which is my favorite sauce to use when preparing tempeh.
In this post, I will show you my favorite method for cooking tempeh: pan-frying. Also read my favorite method for cooking tofu.
How to Pan Fry Tempeh to Golden Brown Perfection
1. Thinly Slice Tempeh
I’ve had the best taste results slicing tempeh into thin pieces about a quarter inch thick. That is key. My pieces are usually about 1″ wide, 3″ length, and .25″ inch thick, but the length and width do not matter.
Cut tempeh into thirds as shown below.

2. Heat 10″ cast iron pan. Add oil and sliced tempeh.
When I cook anything in the pan, I try to use high quality cooking oils like olive or coconut oil. Add 2-3tbsp cooking oil and layer tempeh into frying pan. My 10′ cast iron fits one package of tempeh (16g) perfectly.

3. Cook tempeh until golden brown.
Keep an eye on the tempeh. Once the majority of them are browned on one side, flip all of the pieces over to brown the other side. This takes around 12 minutes total.
4. Add your favorite sauce.
I must recommend Trader Joe’s Organic Sriracha and Roasted Garlic BBQ sauce. It’s my all time favorite! It is too spicy for my kids, so I leave out their portions of tempeh and give them ranch. (*Sigh* They will eat anything covered in ranch…)

5. Serve and ENJOY!
My favorite sides are salad and roasted asparagus. It makes for a really quick dinner. Lately, I’ve been enjoying a kale/broccoli/brussel sprout/cabbage salad mix (pre-shredded and bagged) with Trader Joe’s cilantro dressing.

Bonus for Chicken Owners
When preparing asparagus, I cut off about 2-3″ of the tough base. Instead of letting them go to waste, or into the compost heap, I chop them up and toss them to my chickens. Not all chickens love asparagus, but mine do!
Enjoy your tempeh and let me know what you and your children think of tempeh. If your children love it already, how do you prepare it?
