Doing these things every night will signal to your baby that it’s time to go to sleep. If baby wakes during the night, don’t turn on lights or make a fuss, keep it all calm, quiet and dark.

Diapering

All babies need diapers, but how often they need to be changed can vary. Newborns typically need to be changed around eight to 12 times a day, but this number will decrease as they start to urinate less frequently.

When it comes to diapering, there are two main options: disposable or cloth. Disposable diapers are more convenient, but they can be expensive. Cloth diapers are less expensive, but they require a bit more work.

Whichever type of diaper you choose, make sure to change them regularly to prevent your baby from getting a rash, baby’s skin is super sensitive and will be prone to rashes so remember to give them plenty of diaper free time (I always did this during tummy time).

After four children, I’ve pulled together the best advice I can give to expectant parents to be. When baby arrives, your new life is going to change dramatically. From the day of baby’s arrival much of your old life will vanish, but that’s ok, this is just a phase in your life and you will have so many precious moments with your newborn baby that it will make it worth it!

Follow Your Gut

You know your baby better than anyone else, so trust your instincts! If you think something is wrong, don’t hesitate to call the doctor.

Get Some Sleep

Sleep when your baby sleeps. It sounds cliche, but it’s true! You will need all the energy you can get. Sleep deprivation is no joke. When baby sleeps, grab a nap! A sleep deprived parent doesn’t help anyone.Not all babies fall into a slip routine and after 12 months, you might want to consider some sleep training.

Join a Parenting Group

It can be helpful to talk to other parents who are going through the same thing as you. You can share tips and advice, and you might even make some new friends. When you have a newborn baby it can be very isolating for the first few months and as a first time mom, you might not have any friends with babies yet.

Find a Babysitter or Daycare

You will need some time for yourself, so it’s important to find someone you trust to watch your child. This can be a family member, friend, or professional babysitter/daycare.

Take a Parenting Class

Parenting classes can teach you a lot about taking care of your child. They can also be a great way to meet other parents. These can be better than a baby book as often you can have 1-1 help and information from the class teacher or even other parents who are going through the same thing.

Create a Support System

Having supportive family and friends is crucial when you’re a parent. Lean on them for help and advice, and return the favor when they need it. Expectant moms should do this whilst still pregnant, especially for the first six weeks. Have someone cook, clean house and do the shopping. Don’t worry about being a burden, you can do it back for them when they need it.

Be Patient

Parenting is a learning process, so don’t be too hard on yourself if things don’t go perfectly. You’re doing the best you can! There is no magic formula for raising a baby and many new moms spend endless energy comparing their baby to others. Is your baby gaining weight at the right time, is your baby hitting the right milestones. Every baby is different, stop worrying!

Make Time for Yourself

It’s important to take care of yourself, both physically and mentally. Take a break when you need it, and don’t feel guilty about it. Have a date night, get out for a walk and get some fresh air. Forget the mommy guilt, you won’t be deemed a bad parent for needing some me time. Spending adult time could be just about the best thing you can do.

There’s no shame in asking for help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out to your partner, family, friends, or a professional for support. If your baby’s cry is driving you mad, reach out, and take a break. Every new mom often feels the same, no matter what anyone says, new parenthood is hard!
